"Santa Claus is Coming to Town" is a favorite Christmas Carol of many children. It fills children with the hope and excitement of Santa Claus coming on Christmas Eve to deliver toys and presents. But like the song suggests, Santa only brings presents to children who have been good all year long.
For this reason, parents like the song because it teaches children to be good as Santa Claus is watching. He can see when they are being good or bad, even when they're sleeping. Children will learn that they have to be good to get presents from Santa. Otherwise, they may end up with lumps of coal in their stockings!
The carol also introduces the infamous list that Santa makes with the names of all the boys and girls in the world. It teaches children that each year, Santa will make note of whether each boy or girl has been naughty or nice. And then he will check the list twice to make sure he has it right.
