In preparation for this year's holiday celebrations, a few traditional Christmas carols were picked out for musicians to sink their teeth in, coming up with their own arrangements to the classics. Top recording artists have always used the holiday season to release their own renditions to our favourite Christmas tunes - some of which are completely original and differ from the classic in pace and style.
Bands like the Brian Setzer Orchestra, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and Twisted Sister have all released Christmas Albums that blend the popular classics with their own style. In the late 90's, our favourite guitar gods released Merry Axemas - A Guitar Christmas, Volume I & II, which included the guitar wizardry of Alex Lifeson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, Joe Satrianni, Jeff Beck, Joe Perry, Steve Morse, Richie Sambora, Ali Di Meola, Steve Lukather, Ted Nugent, Trevor Rabin, Neacl Schon, Steve Stevens, Zakk Wylde, and many more.
Following this tradition, a list of Christmas songs were selected and each one given a suggestion to what the arrangement might follow. Most of these suggestions seem difficult to stomach or to imagine at first, but with continuous listening and trial, the musical transformations may prove to be a worthwhile challenge and learning experience.
