The Northwest Florida beaches are getting closer to the rest of the world. No, it’s not continental drift, more like the Southwest Effect, but a part of undiscovered Florida is about to be very discovered.
In May 2010, the newest airport in the country began operating with direct flights to six U. S. cities via Southwest Airlines and Delta. Currently, Delta Airlines has flights to Atlanta and Memphis from the Panama City-Bay County International Airport across the bay in Panama City.
Newest International Airport
The new Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport came about through the need to expand the existing airport. Located on the east shore of West Bay in Panama City, Florida, the area was environmentally sensitive and expansion was impossible due to the encroaching city. Studies were done and it was determined that moving the airport across the bay and north of Panama City Beach was the best solution.
