Memorial Day falls on May 31. This special day honors those who have died while serving the United States. According to the History channel, Memorial Day was first celebrated on May 30, 1868. Originally called, “Decoration Day,” General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic declared that flowers were to be placed on soldiers graves as an act of remembrance for their ultimate sacrifice.

This practice caught on and soon towns across the nation were honoring the dead on Decoration Day. Over the years, the day’s name was changed to Memorial Day and now always falls on the last Monday of May. San Diego is well-known for being a military town and therefore offers a variety of events on Memorial Day in 2010. Here are a few great events to attend.
