Cooktown

Steeped in legend and intrigue stands a solitary mountain in Australia’s outback where strange, inexplicable things happen. Loud noises, eerie sounds, aircraft disturbance, missing people all combine to create a supernatural atmosphere that defies logic or reason.

Regarded as a special place by the local Aboriginal people, the Kuku Yalanji of far north Queensland, this granite outcrop is situated in a national park between the townships of Cairns and Cooktown. Its meaning ‘place of spears’ is curious given that hunting weapons were forbidden to be used there in resolving disputes or so legend has it. Growing into manhood, they became very good hunters who were so capable their tribe often relied upon them daily to provide additional food.
