Each tour leader grew up in San Francisco’s Chinatown, with personal stories that include family history, blending the old Chinatown with the new. This emotional connection and first-hand knowledge make for an interesting learning experience.

Lola Hom, one of the tour guides, points out where her father had a gambling business before it became illegal, and where she grew up in the large building that is low-income housing. She, like many other first generation Chinese, left Chinatown as a young adult to have a better lifestyle. But she can switch between speaking Cantonese and English without hesitation. Ninety-five percent of people living in Chinatown speak Cantonese.
