Campbell Town Australia

The Great Ocean Road is one of the world’s acclaimed coastal drives. It is entrenched as a must-see for visitors to southern Australia and is a popular day-trip from Melbourne. The journey can be broken with stops at the picturesque towns along the way, all of which have fascinating histories. The backgrounds of three of these townships are outlined here.

Apollo Bay

This town’s name originated from the ship The Apollo which sought shelter in a gale on its way from Melbourne to Portland in 1845. The first white men to visit the area were whalers. In the early 1800s they established a whale station, as the Southern Right Whale was easy to find in the local waters in those days.

The lighthouse at Cape Otway was established in 1848 on the southern-most tip of the Western Victorian coastline. William Roadknight and his son led a bullock wagon through the area in 1845 on their way to Cape Otway. The first settlers were timber cutters and mill hands who laid the foundations for the township after 1849.
